Description
Tarpan Arpana (ତର୍ପଣ ଅର୍ପଣ) – Ritual of Offering Reverence to Ancestors
Tarpan Arpana is a sacred Vedic ritual performed to honor and express gratitude to one’s ancestors (Pitru). The word “Tarpan” comes from the Sanskrit root ‘trup’ meaning to satisfy or gratify. Through this ritual, offerings of water mixed with black sesame seeds, barley, and sacred grass (kusha) are made to the departed souls to seek their blessings and ensure their peace in the afterlife.
✨ Significance:
Tarpan is usually performed during Pitru Paksha, Amavasya, Mahalaya, or on death anniversaries. It is believed that performing Tarpan purifies the soul of the doer, removes ancestral doshas (Pitru Dosha), and brings prosperity, peace, and well-being to the family.
